Remember that we deal with alcohol - cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, Chapter 5
It turns out my mother-in-law knew she was leaving weeks ago, and there’s a good chance she’ll be in Mexico by this Saturday.
We’ve been duped. Alcoholism wins, even before the drinking starts.
Love to all. Even you, nervous reader.

I suppose this is further confirmation that YOU (and by “you” I mean the people who care about your MIL) can’t do anything to help her. SHE has to make these choices, and she’s choosing a self-destructive path.
I’m sorry. Truly.
I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry. I know this is hurting both you and Maggie right now.
Cleave… OK?
XOXOOX
I hate that kicked in the gut feeling, don’t you? Be Maggie’s team, hug the kids. Grieve.
When I was first coming around, they used to do this thing with statistics, about how many people were still here after certain lengths of time, and the end of it was always that the odds are against anybody getting and staying sober. The fact that any of us do is a miracle, backed up by each of us wanting to get sober and a reliance on God.
Once you have detoxed, you have a choice. You choose not to drink on a day by day basis. To do that, to stay sober, is a hard slog, and not everyone is willing to be that fearless and thorough.
I’m praying for your MIL, and for Maggie.
Oh, wow. That really sucks. I’m sorry.
Man, that blows. It’s terrible that she is leaving, but worse that she knew all along. You don’t deserve that.
That which doesn’t kill you…? Stiff upper lip…? Ah shit- there are no words for this. Life sucks.
I’m so, so sorry.
